Hundreds Turn Out for Dallas Mayor's Back to School Fair

Hundreds of people turned out Friday for the 19th annual Dallas Mayor's Back to School Fair.

In addition to receiving school supplies at the Back to School Fair, children can get free haircuts, health screenings and immunizations.

"It’s a big help to me and a blessing from God. I don’t have to worry about him sharing or borrowing, he’ll have his very own school supplies. And I don’t have to pay out of my own pocket, which I didn’t have the money for. So it’s a blessing," said parent Nikky Runnels, whose child is headed to kindergarten.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said the fair is an important part of making sure that kids from all economic backgrounds have an equal chance for a great education.

"That's why we do the Back to School Fair," Rawlings said. "It's important to make sure our kids are ready for school."

To take part in the fair parents need to register beforehand and meet certain financial restrictions. Parents of children who attend the fair should bring a valid picture ID, proof of residence and proof of income.
