Dolphin Dies at Texas State Aquarium

The dolphin named D.J. was found dead at the bottom of a dolphin tank early Saturday

One of the three popular bottle-nose dolphins at the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi has died.

An aquarium statement says the dolphin named D.J. was found dead at the bottom of a dolphin tank early Saturday. He was age 15.

Aquarium officials say D.J. had begun behaving unusually Friday and was due for testing when he died.

Aquarium Executive Director Tom Schmid tells the Corpus Christi Caller-Times  the dolphin was swimming but not eating, which might have suggested a toothache.

Schmid says D.J. was born in November 1996 at the Minnesota Zoo in suburban Minneapolis, was considered middle-aged for a dolphin and had appeared to be in good health.

D.J. is the second dolphin to die at the 22-year-old aquarium. Cobie died of pneumonia in 2007 at 15.
