Dog With Jar on Head May Have Been Used as “Blood Bait”

Dog recovering from wounds, dehydration

A North Texas animal rescue group is taking care of an injured dog found with a plastic jar stuck on his head.

Animal Allies of Texas was called when a woman found the dog, now named "Pappy," wandering the streets of Oak Cliff with the large jar around his head. Rescuers were able to catch him on Monday and take him to the vet.

Pappy was severely dehydrated and emaciated when he was found, the rescue group said he weighed 65 lbs. when he should have weighed 90 lbs.

On Wednesday, the lab-mix had surgery at Metro Paws Animal Hospital to amputate the first toe on his left paw.

The group said bite marks on him are evidence he may have been used as a bait dog in dog fighting. Rescuers suspect someone cut the dog's paw so that the blood would attract dogs being trained to fight and the jar kept him from fighting back.

After Pappy has had all of his medical treatment, Animal Allies of Texas will be looking for someone to adopt him.
