Detectives Investigate Second Case of Burned Body in a Month

Police homicide detectives were back at a secluded crime scene in east Fort Worth Wednesday, more than 12 hours after firefighters discovered a burning SUV with two bodies inside.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office identified one of the two victims as 34-year-old John Hernandez of Mission, Texas, Wednesday. The report said Hernandez suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head, chest and abdomen.

Firefighters spotted the smoke and investigated. When they put out the flames, they discovered the remains of two people in the back of the SUV.

Fort Worth police say there is no information that should alarm residents or workers in the area, saying describing the SUV fire as “isolated.”

A spokesman said investigators didn’t have any witnesses to the burning SUV. Investigators asked anyone who may have seen anything related to the fire and bodies to contact police

The Tuesday evening discovery comes four weeks after a similar incident just about a mile away. On Sept. 28, a Fort Worth police officer on routine patrol spotted a burning body in the 3500 block of South Cravens Road.

After several tips to police during the investigation, four people were arrested in connection with the crime. Albert Martinez, Jr., 29, Jeremy Myers, 23, and Alexandria Flores, 22, face capital murder charges in the death of Brittany Chappell. According to an arrest affidavit, the three are accused of suffocating Chappell.

A fourth person, 32-year-old Brian Thompson, is charged with tampering with evidence, as police say he helped dispose of Chappell’s body and burning it.

Fort Worth police say there are is no information the two incidents are linked.
