To raise a child, it takes a village. To replace DeAndre Jordan, it takes a gaggle. Of centers.
Zaza Pachulia and now familiar face Samuel Dalembert, come on down! And in the on-deck circle, perhaps Summer League star Maurice NDour, Tunisian big man Salah Mejri and maybe even talented flake JeVale McGee. Oh, and the Mavs also drafted Satnam Singh.
In other words, the scramble to pick up the pieces shattered by Jordan’s rude, free-agent about-face is an on-going process.
In their latest attempt to be successful on a budget, the Mavs are bringing back Dalembert. Last time we saw him – in 2014 – he was alternating double-doubles with indifferent performances accented by oversleeping and missing practices. Now 34, he’s a big-bodied veteran who will keep the Mavs from getting embarrassed in the paint.
Nothing more. Nothing less.
Dalembert, traded by the Mavs last summer to the Knicks in the Tyson Chandler deal, was waived by New York in January and was out of the league the last half of the season. His return to the Mavs means he’ll play with seven different teams in seven consecutive seasons.
When the Mavs finally return to being a playoff team and a legit contender, Dalembert will not be on their roster.
