Denton Man Shot on Front Door Step

Victim's daughter says shooter claimed to need help with broken car

A Denton homeowner was shot Thursday night by someone who knocked on his front door and asked for help.

Denton police said a young woman called 911 at about 10:45 p.m. and said her father had been shot at their home in the 600 block of Cordell Street.

A relative and neighbor identified the victim as Jose Sanchez. He was airlifted to a Fort Worth hospital, which is not releasing his condition at his family's request.

His daughter told police a man at the door said his car had broken down out front. She went inside and got her father. He was shot moments after stepping out onto his porch.

Sanchez's brother-in-law, Claro Torres, said his niece told him the man specifically asked for her father to assist him. Torres said he believes the man intended to harm Sanchez but doesn't know why.

"He no got no enemies," Torres said. "He's a really nice person. I don't know. I don't got no answer."

Torres, who lives nearby, said his niece came to his house down the street for help after the shooting. When he arrived at his brother-in-law's home, police were on the scene.

"It is terrible," he said. "It is terrible."

Next-door neighbor Bailey Dixon said she heard the shooting.

"We heard what sounded like, it could be mistaken for a firecracker," she said. "[There were] cop cars everywhere, so we knew something had happened, and we knew it was a gunshot."

Dixon said Sanchez and his family have lived in their home for some time.

"These are really good people, and they've never indicated any negative energy," she said. "Jose is a really nice guy."

Dixon said she is not concerned for her safety because she does not think the shooting was random.

"They asked for the dad by name," she said.

Torres said his niece mentioned seeing a red Honda outside before her father was shot.

Denton police have not confirmed any details about the shooting. Police said they are still investigating the shooting, which had few witnesses.

"It's one of those things -- she had gone inside. Two people outside; one shot and one missing, one gone," Denton police spokesman Officer Ryan Grelle.
