Denton Florist Embarks on Royal Trip

Florist traveling to royal wedding for flower arrangements

A retired Denton florist is headed overseas for a chance to see the flower arrangements at the royal wedding.

Joe Alford's two sons are taking him as a Christmas gift. On Saturday, when Westminster Abbey is open for tours, he will get an up-close look at the flowers.

"It will be very obvious that I grew up in a small town," he said. "My neck will be in the air."

Alford owned his flower shop for 45 years and is no stranger to wedding arrangements.

"I've often wished that I've kept count, but I'm sure I did thousands of weddings in that length of time," he said.

He's worked on all kinds of weddings, from intimate to elaborate, but Alford said he's yet to see something like Prince William and Kate Middleton's nuptials.

"It is certainly not something you do in Denton, Texas," he said.

Alford and his sons will witness the royal wedding from afar.

"I received a card during the [Christmas] gift-giving, and it simply said, 'Dad, meet us at the airport, and we will go to London," he said.
