A City Council committee traded the sledge hammer for a felt hammer, in hopes of increasing fines and reducing driver aggravation.

The Denton City Council will consider banning cell phones in school zones on Tuesday.

According to the Denton Record Chronicle, the ban was proposed last year, so council members will resume talks in the work session set for 4:30 p.m.

The proposal would stop drivers from using handheld cell phones to talk or send text messages only when school zones are in effect. A violation would carry a fine up to $200.

Several other North Texas cities already have similar bans including Dallas, Duncanville, Mesquite, Irving, Flower Mound, Rowlett, Lake Dallas, Highland Park and University Park.
