Demonstrators Rally, March to Oppose Family Detention

Hundreds of demonstrators converged on the small South Texas town of Dilley to rally and march on an immigrant family detention center in protest of U.S. immigrant detention policy.

The San Antonio Express-News reports buses from across the state of Texas delivered more than 500 protesters Saturday to a park two miles from a new family detention camp. The camp is designed to hold up to 2,400 immigrant women and children awaiting immigrant processing.

Many demonstrators brandished placards demanding an end to family detention and deportation and the closing of the Dilley detention center and a similar one in Karnes City.

U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement officials have contended the centers are an effective and humane way to keep together immigrant families that may be in the country illegally.
