Deer hunters in Texas are getting ready for what could be one of the best seasons in years.

The Texas deer hunting season begins Saturday for bow hunting, and Nov. 6 for the general gun season.

Lots of rain and plenty of food have helped the deer population flourish, much of it now being caught on camera by trail cams placed strategically near deer stands.

"People get really serious about it, and they can really study it and watch what the deer are moving and doing," said Jamie Dennis, of Bass Pro Shops.

Texas Parks & Wildlife says this year could be "a season to remember."

As bow hunters take to the fields this weekend, many more women will be among them after the state lifted tight restrictions on crossbows more than a year ago.

"There are a lot of women out there who do compound-bow hunt, but for some of us that lack that strength, the crossbow has just been wonderful," said Leah Foreese, of Rockwall.
