Dallas Zoo Loses Beloved Chimpanzee to Cardiac Failure

Chimp fathered three during 20-year life at the Dallas Zoo

The Dallas Zoo is mourning the loss of one of their beloved chimpanzees.

The chimpanzee, 20-year-old KC, was found unresponsive in the chimp building Thursday morning surrouned by his family.

"The chimps were quiet and calm as they respectfully said goodbye to their alpha male," read the Dallas Zoo's Facebook post.

KC was born at the Dallas Zoo in 1997. He fathered three offspring at the zoo and was always very playful with his fellow chimps, zoo officials said.

Officials added the other chimps appear to be doing well, but keepers will have a close eye on them over the next several days as everyone recovers from this loss.

Veterinarians are awaiting test results to determine an exact cause of death, but all indications show KC died from cardiac failure, wrote the Dallas Zoo on their Facebook page.
