A Dallas woman said she tried to fight off an attacker in her home overnight Tuesday, but the man made off with her 8-month-old daughter.

It happened at the Preston Oaks apartments on Preston Oaks Road at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. The woman initially told police a man barged into her apartment and attempted to rape her. She said she was able to fight him off, but then he grabbed her baby and ran away.

She told police her family was in the middle of moving, and that her husband was at their new home when the attack happened.

Police launched a full-scale search on foot and by helicopter, but they have not located the child.

The woman was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. She was later released.

Early Wednesday morning, the woman and her husband were being questioned by the police who said some elements of the story had changed. Investigators are now trying to sort out the facts in the case.

Dallas police Sr. Cpl. Kevin Janse said the story the parents gave does not meet the Dallas Police Department's criteria for issuing an Amber Alert, but didn't explain further.
