Dallas police said someone tried to steal an ATM from a gas station early Thursday morning, marking the 31st attempted ATM theft in less than three months.
Investigators said someone backed a pickup truck into the Raceway gas station in the 8600 block of South Hampton Road at about 3:50 a.m.
Detectives reviewed surveillance video and determined that four masked people used a gold stepside pickup truck to crash into the store. Two people then jumped out of the truck and unsuccessfully tried to take the ATM.
The gas station was closed at the time, so no injuries were reported.
Officials with a task force created to investigate a rash of ATM thefts in Dallas said Thursday's theft might be the work of a group of seven people trying to steal ATMs in Texas and several surrounding states.
