Dallas Police Helicopter Makes Emergency Landing

Pilot hurt in bird strike; co-pilot lands aircraft near Lake Ray Hubbard

A bird crashed through the windshield and forced the Dallas Police Department helicopter Air One to make an emergency landing Monday evening in East Dallas.

A police spokesman said the helicopter was flying near Lake Ray Hubbard when it collided with a bird.

The helicopter had been assisting in the search for a boat that reportedly capsized at the lake. The operator of the boat was located and is safe, police said.

One of the helicopter's pilots was transported to Baylor University Medical Center with minor injuries, including cuts to his face.

The co-pilot landed Air One beside the lake near Dalrock Road and Interstate 30. There, a mechanic patched up the broken windshield before the co-pilot flew the helicopter back to its base late Monday.

The bird did not survive the collision.
