Monroe police say a Dallas man scammed truck drivers throughout the area and as far away as Vicksburg, Miss.
Investigators say 43-year-old Leonard McMorris misrepresented himself to Monroe-area residents as a job recruiter for two pipeline companies. He's held on a theft charge without bail at the Ouachita Correctional Center.
Police Maj. Don Bartley says a truck driver called Tuesday saying he believed he had been a victim of a fraud. He says McMorris had been in the area for eight months and has been posing as a recruiter since April 21.
Police says that besides completing applications over the Internet, McMorris copied the victims' driver's license and Social Security cards and charged each $25 for a drug test and a background check.
