Dallas Mall Owner Plans Major Redevelopment

Outside the box plans in store for Southwest Center Mall

The owner of the Southwest Center Mall is thinking way outside the box for a planned redevelopment of the only mall in the southern half of Dallas.

“We have a pretty clear idea of who we would ideally like to have there,” said Peter Brodsky, owner of the formerly-named Red Bird Mall.

Brodsky told NBC DFW he envisions a combination of entertainment, retail, residential, grocery, hotel and green space as part of his plan to inject new life into the 90-acre property along W. Camp Wisdom Road, near U.S. 67 and Interstate 20.

The parking lots of the 1970s-era shopping mall sit largely empty throughout the day, as do many of its store fronts.

Recently Brodsky brought in a pair of Dallas-based real estate "fixers" who specialize in revitalizing shopping malls.

“We are trying to pluck different ideas from different developments in different parts of the country,” Brodsky said about where his team would draw its inspiration from.

Brodsky could not provide a specific timeline for when development may move forward.

"As soon as possible," is as close as Brodsky would come to a timetable.
