Juneteenth Celebrations Kick Off in Dallas

The City of Dallas is set to kick off annual Juneteenth celebrations Thursday afternoon.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865 - the date slaves in Texas and other states learned the federal government had abolished slavery two years prior. It falls on Sunday this year, which is also Father's Day.

The Picnic on the Plaza, scheduled for 11:30 a.m. through 1 p.m., hosts Dallas' Juneteenth proclamation. The free event will have food trucks lining Dallas City Hall Plaza at 1500 Marilla Street.

Friday, the Juneteenth Festival begins at 1 p.m. and runs through 4 p.m. at the West Dallas Multipurpose Center at 2828 Fish Trap Road. There will be family activities such as storytelling, face painting, games and food vendors.

The City of Dallas's 2016 Annual Juneteenth Celebration also offers live entertainment, food trucks, games and bounce houses. It runs from noon to 5 p.m. at the MLK Community Center, located at 2922 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

All events are free and open to the public.
