Dallas ISD Selling Properties to Pay for New Headquarters

Dallas school officials have a list of more than 30 properties that will likely be sold to help pay for the $46 million they will spend on a new headquarters.

Late Thursday night, the Dallas Independent School District's trustees approved purchase of the building at 9400 North Central Expressway where some Dallas school offices are already housed.

Employees from 16 different existing Dallas school locations would be united at the new headquarters.

The 67-year-old headquarters building at 3700 Ross Avenue would be sold along with several other buildings around the city which the district currently uses for offices.

The list of more than 30 properties includes vacant land and closed schools. A spokesman said the list is tentative and could change.

At Ross Avenue headquarters Friday, parent Ashley Harris said the new building sounds expensive.

"Forty-six million dollars could go to a lot more stuff than relocating this building that's been here for years," she said.

Administrators said the district could save more than $27 million a year in future operating costs by consolidating offices and eliminating surplus property.

Alliance AFT teachers' union leader Rena Honea said it could be a good deal but teachers want proof.

"If the district will be very transparent about this, it could be a good thing for the students, and employees, and the taxpayers of Dallas," she said. "Make sure that it goes back to schools, to the students, for their educational needs."

Honea said some employees are concerned the headquarters will move to North Dallas, farther from many Dallas schools, but district officials said the new headquarters is central to most employees who would work there.
