Dallas Girl, 14, Gets 40 Years in Custody for Drowning Baby

A 14-year-old Dallas girl has been sentenced to the maximum 40 years in custody for drowning an infant she was watching.

A juvenile court judge in Dallas on Friday sentenced the teen, who was not tried as an adult on the capital murder charge.

The teen earlier acknowledged being "responsible," the term used in juvenile courts, for the January death of 2-month-old Justice Hall.

Authorities believe the teen didn't want her mother to adopt Justice. The family kept the baby because the infant's mother was in jail.

The teen's mother was at work when her daughter drowned the baby in a bowl of water.

A juvenile court judge will decide, before the teen turns 19, whether she'll be paroled or be moved to an adult prison to finish her sentence.
