Dallas Crime Fighting Action Promised After Violent Start to 2015

A Dallas city council member Monday promised to help link residents with police after a triple homicide in the Kleberg area of far southeast Dallas.

The shooting at about 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning happened in the 2000 block of Ben Hur Street near U.S. Highway 175 C.F. Hawn Freeway.

The deceased were identified Monday as 54-year-old Max McEwen, 57-year-old Deborah Stanley and 21-year-old Jose Lopez. A fourth victim was critically wounded in the attack.

Another resident of the house who was not injured said she heard a male intruder enter, begin shouting and then start shooting, but she could not see the man well enough to get a description. A police spokesperson Monday said detectives were investigating leads.

Neighbors Sunday said the shooting was the worst mayhem yet in the neighborhood, but that drug activity has been an ongoing problem.

Dallas City Councilman Tennell Atkins represents the Kleberg area.

“One murder is too much. We need to find out how do we solve the issue,” he said.

Atkins said he will schedule a community meeting at the Kleberg Recreation Center to help residents better coordinate Crime Watch programs with police.

“How do we get those people, those residents, to come together with their eyes and ears and start talking?” he said.

Atkins said figures show overall crime was down in 2014 in the Kleberg area compared with 2013 and crime across Dallas has been declining for the past 10 years. He said crime can be reduced even more if residents communicate clearly with each other and with police.

“It’s easy to say the police are not present there. Tell us, we’ll react,” he said.

The Kleberg victims were just three of the six people killed Sunday alone in Dallas.

Trevon Brown, 17, was shot to death at a Deep Ellum event space called Quixotic World in 2800 block of Main Street around 1 a.m. His relatives said detectives have told them charges are expected soon in that case. Police said several people were detained after the shooting. Family members said Brown saw a flier about a party at the location.

Two more people died in an apparent domestic violence murder-suicide in the 7400 block of Hillstar Circle around 2 a.m. Sunday. Patricia Tinajero, 33, was shot multiple times. On Monday police identified the male victim as Roberto Planas-Ruiz, 24. He had a single gunshot wound to the head.
