DISD Targeted in Senator's “Waste Book”

An US Senator is calling out the Dallas Independent School District for wasting taxpayer money.

Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn came out with his "Waste Book" for 2012, focusing on items he felt wasted money.

Coburn singled out DISD for spending $57,000 to send more than 4,000 male students to see the movie "Red Tails." Female students had to stay in the classroom and watch a different movie.

"Red Tails" is a movie about African-American Fighter pilots in World War II.

The trip might have broken gender discrimination rules. After critics spoke up, Dallas ISD officials agreed to send some administrators and teachers to gender sensitivity training.

NBC 5 asked DISD officials what they thought about making the "Waste Book" list, but declined to comment.
