DISD Renames School for Black Educator

The Dallas Independent School District renamed an elementary school after the late black educator Herman I. Holland on Tuesday.

Holland worked in six DISD schools as a teacher, coach and principal in his 43-year career with the district.  He was also active in many civic groups.

The H.I. Holland Elementary School at Lisbon is located at 4203 S. Lancaster Road.  Lisbon, a small farming community in the 1800s, was annexed by the city of Dallas in 1929.  The school, originally Lisbon Elementary, was named for the town.

Students also will perform during the naming ceremony.
