Remembering H.B. McLain: A Witness To History

It was a car ride that changed the course of American history, and now another face who witnessed the assassination of President John F. Kennedy has passed away.

Former Dallas County Sheriff Jim Bowles remembers HB McLain as a country boy who did roofing on the side.

"He was just an ordinary guy, old country boy McLain. Just what his nickname and moniker styled him as," Bowles said. "He was just bullet McLain."

McLain was thrust into the spotlight more than a decade after the Kennedy's death when it was rumored that his police radio recorded several gun shots from the assassination.

"It was not there," Bowles said of the recordings. "All the controversy may explain why, 50 years later, people still come to downtown Dallas to see the exact spot where President Kennedy was killed."

First-hand accounts of one of the most memorable chapters in the nation's history will also be filed away into the books.
