Police: Crowley Manhunt ‘No Longer ‘Active'

Crowley Police Department officials said Thursday that the manhunt for a man suspected of fatally shooting a Fort Worth man is no longer active.

Police said they called off the manhunt because they think 40-year-old Kristun Madewell left Crowley.

"We will not say if we know where we believe he is headed," Crowley Police Department spokesman C.C. Meadows said.

Authorities said they suspect Madewell in the fatal shooting of a 29-year-old man at a Fort Worth home with two children inside. They received a tip that he was at a Johnson County home, but Madewell fled when officers approached Wednesday.

Crowley police locked down the Centennial Place subdivision for several hours Wednesday night while they searched for Madewell. Officers knocked on every door to let residents know what was going on and tell them to stay inside with their doors locked and blinds drawn.

"All of the entrances were blocked off," resident Phillip Danner said. "I’ve gone through the entire house making sure everything’s locked."

Police said residents should remain on high alert despite the manhunt being called off.

"There are additional patrol units dedicated to the area to augment security," Fort Worth Police Department spokesman Sgt. Steve Enright said. "Fugitive officers will continue to search for the suspect as well."

Lt. Tim Jones with the Johnson County Sheriff's Department confirmed to NBC 5 a Cleburne Times Review report that dogs tracked Madewell to an area near Huguley Hospital at about 2 a.m. Thursday morning. Jones said Madewell has connections to schools in Joshua placed on lockdown while police search the area but that he has not been seen in the town.

Meanwhile, in Fort Worth, police said Thursday they are not concentrating their search in any one particular area and instead have extra patrols on hand with officers following up on unusual calls or tips.

Madewell is described as 6 feet 2 inches tall and about 270 pounds with brown hair and eyes. Police said they consider him dangerous and possibly armed.

Many neighborhood residents told NBC 5 that neither they nor their children slept much.

It was very frightening," resident Courtney Doyle said. "Me and my [6-year-old] daughter, we stayed in the same bedroom last night."

Officials with the nearby Joshua Independent School District placed their schools under a precautionary lockdown Thursday morning in response to the manhunt.
