Crash Near Mountain Creek Lake Kills 3 Dallas Baptist University Students

Students at Dallas Baptist University are mourning the loss of three classmates killed in a car crash early Saturday morning.

The university confirmed that Will Smith of Bullard; Justin Schubert of Cleburne and Djordje (DJ) Sarenac of Belgrade, Serbia all died in the crash.

“Seeing a dear friend go is never something that anybody wants to experience,” said student, Davis Hern.

According to the university, the three students were in different grades, but lived in the same dorm together. On a campus with about 5,000 students, almost everyone knew them. By Saturday afternoon, they all had heard what happened to them.

“It's going to be weird not seeing them because you literally saw them everywhere-in the cafeteria, walking around, you always saw them,” said Alysia Oldacre, a close friend of Schubert.

According to Dallas police, the students died after their 2009 Chevy Silverado pickup truck crashed into an electricity pole around 3 a.m. near Mountain Creek Parkway and Grady Niblo Road. Police have not said what caused the crash or who was driving the truck.

“It's been a really hard day, really hard day,” said Dean of Students, Jay Harley.

Saturday, the university provided grief counselors for students.

While some have already left for the summer, those remaining will be invited to attend a memorial service in the Pilgrim Chapel on campus Sunday at 9 p.m.

“DBU is a family, and I think since we are people are close together. And when one part of the family hurts everybody is going to hurt,” Harley said, “You'll see people come tomorrow night that didn't even really know the guys. But they'll be here because they're part of the DBU family.”
