Corsicana Bakery Carrying on Fruitcake Tradition

This is a busy time of year for the Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana, where holiday traditions are carried on through fruitcake.

It's a cake some people love to hate.

"Well, there's a lot of bad fruitcake out there," said Hayden Crawford, with Collin Street Bakery. "I think they don't like it until they try ours and find out it's the best they've ever had."

Collin Street Bakery is the largest single producer of fruitcake in the world. From their Corsicana kitchen, the bakery makes an estimated 1 million fruitcakes every year, most of them between October and December.

They ship their desserts to 196 countries all over the world.

"One of our customers asked that his cake be delivered by a Sherpa up the side of Kilimanjaro, so there's that," Crawford pointed out.

He said the longest shipping distance was to the South Pole.

"It goes everywhere. It's popular!" he said.

"I read that you can write a letter and address it to Collin Street Bakery Fruitcake Texas and it will get here," said customer Susan Wilson. "It's true! That's what they're known for."
