Computer Glitch Delays Some STAAR Retesting

Texas education officials say thousands of students retaking a standardized test had to skip the electronic version due to a computer glitch.

The Austin American-Statesman reports some students and testing coordinators on Monday had trouble launching the system or logging back on.

Texas Education Agency spokeswoman Debbie Ratcliffe says contractor Pearson Education apparently had a computer server issue with the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness, or STAAR, exam.

Ratcliffe says some districts switched to a paper version. Others will postpone the exam until later this week.

The newspaper reports about 19,000 students were ready to do the online version. Nearly 3,400 had trouble signing on. Most students were taking the writing portion of the English I exam, which they previously failed.

A spokesman for Pearson declined comment.
