Computer Class ‘Deleted' from Frisco Elementary Schools

Teachers are integrating technology with everyday lessons instead

Some Frisco parents wonder why computer classes aren't on their kids' schedules this school year.

The Frisco Independent School District has stopped holding traditional computer classes in elementary schools.

Jill Thuenemann has a fourth grader who attends a Frisco elementary school.

"I do worry that having that lack of computer class is going to hinder some kids that may not have access to this kind of technology in their home," she said.

But the district says students are still learning tech skills, just not in the same way as years past.

Instead of having a set class time, teachers are now integrating technology into everyday lessons more often, using iPads and laptops.

Homeroom teachers can now reserve a room full of desktop computers for instruction whenever they want.

"It's a tool that's going to help them learn at a deeper level. It's more authentic," said Mia Bennett, director of elementary instruction for Frisco ISD.

Bennett said blending technology with teaching translates to more practical skills for students in the long run.

"Things are not in isolation because when they're in isolation they really have a hard time transferring their learning to real life situation," she said.
