Communal Spider Web Sprawls on Trees at Rowlett Park

A sprawling spider web at a Dallas-area park has attracted thousands of insects and the attention of people curious about arachnids.

Officials with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service say the communal web has emerged at Lakeside Park South in Rowlett.

Urban entomologist Mike Merchant says thousands of spiders can be seen darting among the webs that extend up to 40 feet into the trees. He says the webs are draping the trees like shrouds.

Merchant says the spiders are basically harmless and there's no need to do anything, other than to just appreciate the communal nest.

The webs can be seen along C.A. Roan Drive near the circular drive and parking lot.
