Columbia Astronaut Honored at UT Arlington

Students walking the halls of Nedderman Hall at the University of Texas at Arlington have a new source of inspiration.

A display of former student and astronaut Kalpana Chawla was dedicated at noon Monday.

Chawla, one of the University's most celebrated graduates, was aboard the Columbia Space Shuttle when it broke apart over North Texas during re-entry in February 2003.

The display, donated by her husband Jean-Pierre Harrison, includes one of her flight suits, several photos and historical and biographical information about Chawla and the space program. Also included in the display is a flag flown over Johnson Space Center during the memorial for the fallen astronauts.

Astronauts Janet Kavandi and Dominic Gorie, both colleagues of Chawla, were scheduled to speak, as were her husband, UTA President James D. Spaniolo and Engineering Dean Bill Carroll.
