Passport Offices in Collin County to Reopen after Fee Dispute

Passport offices in Collin County will reopen Wednesday after a fee dispute forced them to close for two days this week.

The offices in McKinney and Plano were forced to temporarily close Monday and Tuesday because of a fee dispute with the Dallas Passport Agency.

Collin County District Clerk Lynne Finley said the dispute centered on overnight passport processing fees.

Collin County charges $25 for the service while the Dallas Passport Agency charges $23.75, Finley said. The Dallas Passport Agency said Collin County is charging $1.25 too much, according to Finley.

Finley said Collin County processes about 40,000 passports each year. It's been collecting the $25 fee since 2013.

She said requests to process passports overnight are relatively rare adding the last request was in March.

NBC 5 witnessed a stream of frustrated customers at the Plano office Tuesday because they were unable to receive service.

A sign on the door at the Plano location notified people the offices were temporarily closed.

Finley told NBC 5 she obtained an order from an administrative judge to change the amount of the fee collected to $23.75.

The Collin County Commissioners Court will discuss the matter on Thursday.
