Collin County Community Concerned About Sidewalk Safety

Some in the Montgomery Farm community in Allen are concerned about the safety of children and pedestrians due to the lack of a sidewalk along a busy stretch of road.

At the corner of Bethany Drive and Brett Drive, the sidewalk stops and residents say they are forced to either cross the street or turn around.

“I have my little stroller and I'm running across. Really they are blind turns so the cars can't see us and we can't see them and they are going really fast," Rainie Graham said.

Graham has lived in the area for two years and said it is common knowledge in the community that you’ve got to cross quickly.

"This road is hard because the cars are coming so fast and there's a lot of curves,” Graham said.”You just have to look and run and hope no one trips along the way and no one hits those little bumps in the road."

Officials for the city of Allen said relief could be on the way.

“With the development of Montgomery Farm Estates currently underway, the developer will build a 5-foot-wide sidewalk that will provide continuous linkage to connect Brett to the Bel Air/Montgomery Intersection,” Teresa Warren said.

Some residents in the area said they would like to see a traffic signal or a crosswalk.

“The Bel Air/Montgomery and Bethany intersection does not currently warrant a signal light,” Warren said. “However, it is likely that a signal light will be installed as traffic volumes increase from continued development.”

“The state has a series of guidelines and factors that dictate crosswalk installation so this would require a full engineering study,” Warren added. “To date, we have not received any requests to provide an analysis.”
