Colleges Return to Class with Campus Carry

The class of 2020 won’t be the only new addition to classes at the University of North Texas on Monday.

For the first time students at the Denton campus will return to class with the new state-wide campus carry law in effect.

The law officially went into effect August 1, but for most the fall semester marks the beginning of the new rule being a part of life at their school.

At UNT, leaders spent the last year setting up their own policy when it comes to carry guns on campus.

The school launched a website dedicated to the topic and placed signs on buildings this summer where guns will absolutely not be allowed.

UNT Police Chief Ed Reynolds told NBC 5 in July that the situation will be under control on their campuses.

"What hasn't changed is if you see someone with a gun on campus, you should call 911,” he said. β€œThis is concealed carry, not open carry."

As students walked the campus Sunday morning, several reported hearing about the new policy during orientations or on the news, but love it or hate it, most said they hope it just remains a non-factor.
