College Police Officers on Leave After Video Surfaces

El Centro College officers placed on leave

Cell phone video has landed two El Centro College police officers on administrative leave in Dallas.

One of the officers in the video can be heard talking to four teenagers who were detained outside the school.

“I got a lot of stuff on my belt that will take care of you this afternoon, I guarantee you,” the officer is heard saying to the teens. “I would be glad to use some of it.”

An El Centro student captured the incident on his cell phone.

“What happened was not warranted,” said student Charles Adams. “Not by them.”

Adams does not know the teenagers in the video, but he said he and the four teens were standing outside the college, and he recalls hearing them say they were waiting for the bus.

“They weren't heckling people. They weren't bothering anyone,” said Adams.

Now the school is investigating since the video surfaced.

“I’d rather not prejudge the investigation that's going to be done,” said El Centro College President José Adames.

Adames said he did not know what triggered the officers to approach the teens. The school is withholding the police report since it involves teenagers.

“It does not represent the views of the district, of the police officers in the district, the police officers at El Centro, the administration, the students and the staff,” said Adames.

The college president said the teens were given a citation, but would not say what they were cited for.

“I didn't expect that to happen,” said Adams, the student who recording the incident. “I think that's hard for me now, especially since it’s becoming an issue.”
