Cities Begin Post-Flood Mosquito Fight

Spray trucks are rolling in Grand Prairie this week after three mosquito traps tested positive for the West Nile virus

"We kind of expected more mosquitoes in the area now, especially since it’s been raining, we know the water is going to create more opportunities for mosquitoes so we take the precautions," said Stephen Scott, of Grand Prairie.

Scott made sure to spray his children with mosquito repellent before taking them for a walk.

"You’re going to see a lot of mosquitoes; they could be flood water mosquitoes," said Dallas County Health Director Zachary Thompson.

Dallas County is now reporting five positive tests, three in Grand Prairie and one each in DeSoto and Mesquite.

So far, there are no human cases reported.

"What we do know based on five positive mosquito pools is that the virus is present in Dallas County," said Thompson.

"You have to go out, remove standing water around your home,” said Thompson. β€œCheck on your neighbors in terms of reminding them to remove standing water."

DeSoto finished spraying overnight Sunday, but Grand Prairie has two more nights planned.
