Child Located, Father Arrested Following 2014 Denton Amber Alert

Man faces murder charge in death of child's mother at Denton business, police say

More than a year after the death of a Denton woman and the disappearance of her young son, the child has been safely located and a suspect arrested in the woman's death, police say.

An Amber Alert was activated Dec. 13, 2014, for Ricardo "Alek" Lara, who was four years old at the time, after Denton police found the boy's mother, 27-year-old Maria "Isabel" Romero Medina, deceased at her place of business at Sanchez Insurance on East McKinney Street.

Investigators said they believed Alek was with his dad, Ricardo Martinez, and they were believed to be in Mexico.

In early 2015, a Denton County grand jury indicted Martinez for murder.

Denton police worked with the U.S. Department of Justice, the FBI and Mexican authorities in locating the father and son Monday in Mexico.

Martinez was arrested and remains in the custody of Mexican authorities.

Denton police said Alek has been safely returned to family in Texas.
