Dallas police said they responded to a kidnapping call at the parking lot near The Kids Corner child care facility in the 3900 block of South Polk Street at about 7:30 a.m. and found the girl.

The day care owner's sister, Diane Brown, told NBCDFW the girl was left inside the running vehicle while her 24-year-old mother was inside dropping off another child. The mother saw a man get into the car and ran after it. The mother and another witness slowed the vehicle enough for the girl to jump out.

Police said the mother remained on the car until the man stopped in a nearby parking lot, assaulted the mother and demanded money. The mother gave her cash to the man, who ran away.

Authorities said the girl was transported to Children’s Health Children's Medical Center of Dallas with minor injuries on her hands and knees. The mother was also transported with minor injuries.

Authorities say an 8-year-old girl left in a running vehicle escaped as the vehicle was being stolen in a parking lot near a Dallas day care Tuesday morning.

Brown said parents often leave their children in their vehicles and should not.

"Take your keys and your child out of the car and this won't happen," she said.

Police said they are still searching for the man who tried to steal the vehicle. He was described as 20 to 25 years old and 5 feet 5 inches tall. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and dark jeans.
