Child, 2, Dies at Unlicensed Daycare Facility

A 2-year-old Houston-area girl has died of burns suffered at an apartment that authorities say was serving as an unlicensed daycare facility.

Sheriff's officers and child welfare officials from Harris County are investigating after the child, whose name has not been disclosed, was scalded in a bathtub Thursday evening at the apartment in east Harris County. She died after being flown by helicopter to a hospital.

Child Protective Services spokeswoman Gwen Carter tells the Houston Chronicle the facility is being treated as an illegal operation because there's no record of it being registered with the state.

She says investigators are trying to find people who worked there to determine how many children may have been in the apartment at the time.
