Man Steals Fort Worth Family's Car During Chase

An unidentified man stole a Fort Worth family's car soon after a police chase ended near their home Monday night.

Kevin and Jo Ann Collins were watching television at their home in the Wedgwood neighborhood when they heard questionable sounds toward the end of the show.

“Right near the end of it, we heard a screech," said Kevin Collins. "Like, car wheels."

The couple went to rewind the program they were watching to see if the noise was from the television or outside. But, seconds later, they heard their dog barking.

“I said to Jo Ann, 'There is somebody in the house,'” Collins said.

Collins walked to the hall and found the back door of the home open and footprints inside. His wife's purse was gone.

“I opened the garage door, and just as I came to the garage door, I saw him sitting in the car backing out the driveway,” Collins said.

The Collins' were unknowingly part of a police chase.

Earlier that evening, police, on routine patrol, found a car on Benbrook Highway that was possibly stolen. That discovery led officers on a short chase.

The screech that the couple heard was likely from the chase before the driver broke into their home and stole their car.

The Collins' car was recovered early Tuesday, but most of the contents of the purse were gone.

“It was shocking, because we were watching this program Breaking Bad. And then all of a sudden it is in our life,” said Collins.

Police are still searching for the driver.
