Cedar Hill Police Search for Man Who Shot Jogger

A man who was robbed and shot while jogging in Cedar Hill is speaking out, and police need helping finding the person who attacked him.

The shooting happened Tuesday at about 5:45 a.m. in a quiet residential area on the 300 block of Trees Drive.

The victim, James Rathbun, said the gunman came out of nowhere and shot at him twice. The second bullet almost hit vital arteries, but Rathbun said a weight vest saved his life. Rathbun said he was out training for a spartan race when he was shot. One of the bullets pierced the vest but stopped just short of his skin.

Another bullet entered his shoulder.

Rathbun was transported to Methodist Central Hospital in Dallas, and is expected to be OK.

"I ended up falling into the street. As I'm falling, I hear a shot go off. It was two shots. This one entered and came out the other side of my shoulder, and the second one was stuck inside my weight vest," Rathbun said.

He was bruised and shaken when he spoke with NBC 5, but is hoping someone recognizes the person who shot him, whose image was caught on home surveillance video.

The man is seen on video approaching Rathbun just before the shooting and then running away moments after the confrontation.

Rathbun says he's concerned about what the gunman might do next.

Police described him as a black male, between 18-22 years old, with a slender build, last seen wearing a white tank top and a black cloth rag on his head.

Officers set up a perimeter and used a K9 officer to search for the gunman, but couldn't find him.

Police say the incident appeared to be random, and they're asking residents to stay aware of their surroundings and watch out for one another.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Cedar Hill Police Department at 972-291-5181.
