Cedar Hill Nurse Gets 10 Years in Prison for Medicare Fraud

A North Texas registered nurse must serve 10 years in prison for her role in a $25 million Medicare scam that earlier landed her husband behind bars.

Pat Akamnonu of Cedar Hill was sentenced Wednesday by a federal judge in Dallas. She pleaded guilty in June to conspiracy to commit health care fraud over bogus billing to Medicare.

Prosecutors say the woman and her spouse, Cyprian Akamnonu, owned Ultimate Care Home Health Services Inc. He's already serving 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to the same conspiracy count.

Both were also ordered to repay $25 million to the government over the scam running from 2006 through 2011.

Investigators say the case involved millions charged to Medicare for home health care services that were never provided or needed.
