“Cat Lady” Survived by 100 Cats

Some good neighbors in Johnson City came forward when an elderly woman known as the "cat lady" died, leaving behind more than 100 felines.

Blanco County has no animal control agency or animal shelter.

Sheriff Bill Elsbury said county commissioners gave $500 to the all-volunteer Blanco County Cat Coalition to help care for the 110 animals on Glinne Berry's property.

The Austin American-Statesman reported Wednesday that Elsbury said, in his community, "we have a problem, and everybody rallies around it."

Officials said Berry died in July of an apparent heart attack. She was 72.

The Austin Humane Society agreed to fix and treat 40 cats free of charge. Other animal rescue groups also helped.
