Candlelight Event Marks Pregnancy and Infant Loss Month

On Sunday, hundreds of people are expected to gather in Fort Worth and Irving for the International Wave of Light. It's a candlelight event to mark Pregnancy and Infant Loss Month.

If you've never heard of it, it might be because it's a subject that isn't spoken of often.

"When my son, Max, died in 2013, I felt very alone," said DeAndrea Dare, founder of A Memory Grows, a support group for parents who lost a pregnancy or infant.

"When a child dies, there is a sense of the unknown, what to say. It's out-of-order in a sense, and people don't want to talk about it," Dare said.

Dare said she went to a retreat in Wisconsin to be able to talk about it. She came back with a mission to help other parents.

Dare started A Memory Grows, one of two support groups like it in the nation, which provide retreats for parents dealing with the unique loss of a pregnancy or infant.

"I feel it's one of the loneliest journeys anyone can ever travel," Dare said.

Sunday's Wave of Light event is help families like hers know, they aren't alone.

"It's a safe space to cry, to laugh, to remember," she said.

Dare's A Memory Grows non-profit teamed up with MEND, Team Mercy, and Holy Sews to put on Dallas/Fort Worth's International Wave of Light. It starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Tarrant County Courthouse in Fort Worth and the MEND Garden of Hope at Calvary Church in Irving.

Candles will be lit for one hour, starting at 7 p.m. in every time zone around the world, causing a wave of light.
