Bus Fails to Pick Up Dallas Special Education Students

Dallas ISD confirms a dozen students have missed school for two days

A school bus serving special education students has failed to show up at a dozen homes due to paperwork and administration issues, according to a Dallas County Schools spokeswoman.

Dallas County Schools operates transportation services for the Dallas Independent School District. A bus is supposed to pick up and drop off the students at their individual homes.

Dallas ISD confirmed a dozen students haven't been in class at Multiple Careers Magnet Center, a school geared for teenagers with special needs or learning disabilities.

"We apologize for the confusion and the disappointment these children must feel about missing the first two days of school," said Dallas County Schools spokeswoman Carey Marin, in a statement. "We are calling each family this afternoon to apologize and provide instructions for tomorrow. This was a paperwork and administrative issue that should not have happened. Next time, we will move more quickly to resolve any last minute additions."

George Martinez is one of a dozen students who missed school. He said transportation was never an issue last school year.

"I never had problems. My bus would come and I would be here waiting," said Martinez. "I want to be at school because I need my education."

Martinez has no other way to get to school. He relies on the school bus to pick him up and drop him off.

The school will provide a DART taxi for Martinez to get him to school and back home on Wednesday.
