Bridgeport officials said an officer died in the line of duty when a vehicle fleeing Wise County sheriff's deputies struck his patrol car on Thursday afternoon.

Steven York, of Wise County, rammed the rear of Sgt. Randy White's cruiser at Farm Road 2123 and Texas Highway 114 shortly at about 3:16 p.m., the city said.

Wise County deputies began pursuing York in Decatur on U.S. 287 at about 2:41 p.m.

White was one of three Bridgeport officers responding to a call from Wise County deputies for assistance.  He was struck while trying to wave another car out of the way of the pursuit.

White was pronounced dead at the crash scene.

York was injured and was airlifted to a hospital.
