How much are you willing to pay to get in shape? Samantha Chatman searches for the best gym membership deals in North Texas. (Published Monday, Jan. 16, 2017)

It happens every holiday season — we gain a few pounds and spend a lot of money doing it.

By the beginning of the new year your wallet is empty, but your belly is still a bit full. The good thing is, recovery is right around the corner, and it won't cost you an arm and a leg.

Many of us have a love-hate relationship when it comes to the gym. Love the thought of losing weight, hate the idea of actually getting off the couch to make it happen. But if you've finally convinced yourself that now's the time, there are a few things to consider before joining a fitness center.

The North Texans we spoke with say the monthly gym fee is a huge factor. The special deals are out there, especially in the month of January.

Planet Fitness, for example, is offering a special of $10 per month with no commitment and a $1 enrollment fee. They have dozens of cardio machines, strength equipment, fully equipped locker rooms and special amenities like hydromassage beds and massage chairs.

LA Fitness is going to cost you more, but the amenities may be worth it. For as little as $19.99 per month, a $49 annual fee and an initiation fee, members can enjoy the indoor pool, group fitness classes, a sauna, personal training and indoor cycling.

But let's say you're not ready to commit to any gym you want to take your time and you want to test the waters. Anytime Fitness and 24 Hour Fitness offer free multi-day trials. It's a great way for you to work out for free, bring a friend and tour the facility to see if it's right for you.

If you want to stay away from the gym altogether, check out Groupon. There you can find a wide range of small group fitness classes at great discounts.

So don't give up on your New Year Resolution yet. If you're looking for more ways to lose weight on a budget, here are some options:

    • Find a friend who is just as determined as you are and try walking or jogging with that person outdoors. It can be very therapeutic.
    • You can also sign up for dog-walking jobs in your spare time. That way you're burning fat, while making a little extra cash.
    • Definitely take advantage of those free trials at different gyms. They may be able to get you through the entire month of January.
