Brave Chicken Traps Gator in Park

An alligator in a Sherman park was no match for a brave chicken.

A live chicken helped lure a 6-foot-long alligator into a trap at a Sherman park that had been closed since the reptile surfaced.

Parks and Recreation administrator Kevin Winkler said the trap at Pickens Lake was checked Wednesday, and the alligator was inside.

The brave chicken, in a separate cage within the wire trap, was unharmed.

Winkler said a person at Herman Baker Park on Sunday noticed the alligator. Texas Parks and Wildlife experts were notified, and traps were set Tuesday.

Winkler said he doesn't think the alligator "had ever been a pet, or that somebody released it."

He said he believes the reptile migrated to the area.

The gator was being taken to a wildlife rehabilitation center for evaluation.
