One person has died and a second was injured after a home caught fire in Dallas early Thursday morning.

Firefighters were called to the home on the 6400 block of Elam Road at 9:41 a.m. after someone at the nearby Janie C. Turner Recreation Center spotted smoke coming from the roof of the home.

When Dallas Fire-Rescue arrived, firefighters reported seeing a worker from the recreation center and a postal worker courageously trying to put out the fire with only a fire extinguisher.

"It's nothing we would recommend someone do, but it's certainly a heroic act," said Jason Evans, with Dallas Fire-Rescue. "They probably would say they were doing what anyone else would do."

DFR had the fire tapped out by 10 a.m., after which the person's remains were recovered.

The victim's identity and cause of death have not yet been determined. Firefighters said a woman was able to escape the fire without injury, though she was transported to an area hospital as a precaution and treated for smoke inhalation.

The relationship between the man and woman has not been established.

No other injuries have been reported in connection with the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation, though fire officials did say there was a large amount of clutter inside the home.

NBC 5's Jeff Smith contributed to this report.
