Boat Ramps Open for Labor Day Weekend

Boaters are enjoying North Texas lakes this Labor Day weekend, many for the first time this summer.

“It’s been great,” said Jessica Douglas, of Arlington. “I normally spend all summer out on the lake and we haven’t been able to this summer. But finally being able to get out there, I think I did like every water sport available to me today.”

After being closed for months by high water, the lake level at Joe Pool Lake dropped enough to reopen the boat ramp at Lynn Creek Marina in time for the long holiday weekend.

“Being Labor Day weekend, it’s just a plus, just being able to get back out on your hometown lake,” said Paul Wise, of Midlothian. “It's just something we’ve been waiting on since this flood happened.”

Over the holiday weekend, water remained high at Lake Grapevine, but dropped just enough Friday to re-open the busy Dove Loop Road ramp in time.

“We brought in some more rap, reinforcement material, there were a couple potholes in a couple places where we patched just so when you launch the boat you have a smooth transition down to the water,” said Kevin Mitchell, Grapevine Parks & Recreation director.

“So there was work underneath the water that we definitely did that you can’t see to make it more enjoyable,” said Mitchell.

Many other boat ramps remain closed, but boaters who want to make up for lost time on the water should be able to find a place to launch before summer ends.
