Caroline Ware said she was sleeping on the couch at the house in the 1300 block of Fernwood Avenue when the fire alarm woke her up just after midnight.

The flames quickly spread throughout most of the house, according to Dallas Fire-Rescue. Ware told NBC 5 she struggled to make it out of the home, and was nearly overcome by the smoke.

Ware said she climbed onto an electric scooter and drove it out of the home, onto the front porch. She said she couldn't make it any further on her own, though.

"I kept screaming for people," she said. "I didn’t know what to do or where to go. Neighbors came and got me. I thanked them for that."

Ware's daughter had left for a few minutes when the fire started. The house was fully engulfed when she returned.

NBC 5's Todd L. Davis contributed to this report.
